As an innate introvert, starting my sales career proved to be challenging. During my initial month as a Business Development Representative (BDR), I consistently fell short of meeting my quota each week. It was a tough period for me, but despite the difficulties I faced in finding my footing during calls, I refused to let my nerves overcome me.
As an introvert stepping into the sales world, I encountered initial challenges, but I persevered through practice, research, and learning from managers. Eventually, I found my rhythm and began consistently meeting or exceeding quotas.
Here are some tips and tricks that any sales rep can use to elevate their sales calls:
- Thoroughly research your prospects. Being well-prepared before a call boosts confidence and excitement. Understand their needs and how your offering can be a solution, positioning yourself as a trustworthy expert ready to make their lives easier. Seek shared interests or exciting aspects about the prospect’s company to get excited about the call.
- Be an expert in your product or service. Know every detail about your offering and how it sets itself apart from others. Confidence grows as you become more knowledgeable, allowing you to handle any questions or concerns effectively.
- Prioritize positivity and high-energy. Prepare by engaging in activities that make you laugh, smile, or pump you up. A positive mood enhances your approach, making you more helpful and focused.
- Utilize positive body language. Stand up, walk around, and use hand gestures during video or phone calls. This not only helps you think clearly but also communicates more effectively to the prospect.
- Embrace nature’s calming influence. Look at plants or greenery before a call to reduce stress and anxiety, promoting a more relaxed and focused mindset.
- Practice mindful breathing. Take 30 seconds to meditate and clear your mind before important calls. Deep, thoughtful breaths ensure your brain functions at its best during crucial conversations.
These techniques, including additional routines you may have, can help you excel in your sales calls. They have proven effective for me, and I encourage you to give them a try and witness the positive impact they can have.
